Superb single shot flintlock shotgun by Bellan fils in Toulo - Lot 67
Superb single shot flintlock shotgun by Bellan fils in Toulouse (second half 18th century). Very long barrel of 1040mm in calibre 26 to the pound. The barrel octagonal then multifaceted flutes then round with flat bands presents very beautiful remains of gold incrustation and three punches in hollow at the beginning of the thunder including one presenting the crowned weapons of France. Marking "canon tordu" in partially erased gold letters. Silver handlebar surrounded by a golden sunburst. Round lock body bearing the signature Bellan fils à Toulouse, round gooseneck hammer, round forged bassinet, battery spring screwed from the inside. All silver trimmings. Hallmarks of a Toulouse goldsmith under the trigger guard (1751), cover plate with hallmarks of a Parisian goldsmith (circa 1775). Beautiful French-style French-style blond checkered walnut frame at the grip, three drawers in the barrel hold the barrel. Curved whalebone dewlap ramrod fits into a ramrod channel extending into the grip. Silver thumb piece with illegible coat of arms. Functional mechanism. To be handled with care, the collar of the hammer being split and needing to be re-welded. A weapon of great quality, however, testifying to the technological prowess of this dynasty of gunsmiths who practised their art for several centuries.
