Superb early 19th century naval officer's dagger, probably British. Overall length: 470mm. Superb, very curved, flat-backed blade, highlighted with a gutter. Half-blued and gilded blade still bearing the traditional incised gilded line decoration on a water-blue background. Chased gilt-bronze mounting, long-tailed cap decorated with raised foliage. Contrasting hilt with disc-shaped quillon. Guard plate decorated with an engraved and cut-out tarasca. Ebony spindle, squared on the sides, smooth on the front (crack on both sides, repairable). In a brass scabbard imitating a cavalry scabbard, two engraved bracelets bearing two welded studs holding rings, asymmetrical stinger. Substantial residual gilding (1-)
