Versailles model 1793 cavalry carbine. Strong octagonal rifl - Lot 141
Versailles model 1793 cavalry carbine. Strong octagonal rifled barrel slightly flared at the muzzle with deep rifling in 13.5 mm caliber. Line of sight marked by a narrow milling at the breech tail and thunderbolt at the rear and muzzle at the front. Unreadable recessed oval receiver stamp on the upper barrel flange at thunder level. Flat-body lock signed in cursive letters "Manufacture à Versailles". Engraved hallmark with Phrygian cap and "V 3". Brass breechblock, original hammer missing (replaced by a lead hammer), hammer spring screw missing, nut flange split in place, rear lock screw broken at end and thread not engaging in lock body tapping. Gun mounted in varnished walnut with frame extending to the muzzle, splinted at the level of the lock's woodwork. All brass fittings except front grenadière ring, which is iron as always. Missing ramrod, untested cocking and half cocking notches, but very probably functional given the sharpness of the notch angles. (Condition 2)
