What is a numismatic?
Numismatics is the discipline that studies coins and medals. The numismatic is therefore a scholar specialized in the study of ancient coins. But more generally, the term numismatic also refers to a collector of medals and antique coins.
The origins of numismatics date back to Roman antiquity. At the time, collectors held coin cabinets. Some collected the coins because of their rarity and their values (in the hope of making a profit on resale). Others, however, were numismatics out of passion. They held rare coin collections for prestige reasons.
