BABEUF (Gracchus). ON THE SYSTEM OF DEPOPULATION, or The Lif - Lot 25
BABEUF (Gracchus). ON THE SYSTEM OF DEPOPULATION, or The Life and Crimes of Carrier; his Trial, and that of the Revolutionary Committee of Nantes: with research and political considerations on the general aims of the Decemvirate in devising this system; on its primary connection with the War in the Vendée; and on the plan to apply it to all parts of the Republic. Paris, Franklin Press, Year 3 of the Republic [1794]. 8½vo., ochre-colored chagrin cloth with corner pieces, smooth spine divided by gilt fillets, gilt title (later binding); frontispiece portrait, 194 pages [i.e., 192 pages; pages 152 through 155 are missing], including half-title, title page, table of contents, and errata. A small corner tear on the last 6 leaves, without damage to the text; the title page is discolored with the portrait faded; slight water stain in the upper corner of the last leaves. RARE FIRST EDITION of this text written by Gracchus Babeuf, in which he condemns the policies of Robespierre’s Republican armies, and in particular the suppression of the counter-Revolution carried out in the Vendée and in Nantes by Carrier, whom he describes as a perpetrator of genocide. Engraved PORTRAIT of Jean-Baptiste CARRIER (1756–1794) accompanied by a quatrain by Voltaire taken from *La Henriade*. GOOD COPY, complete with the portrait and all its pages, preserved in a binding from the early second half of the 19th century. ¶ Martin & Walter, “Catalogue de l’histoire de France,” I-950 - Lemière, “Bibliography of the Counter-Revolution in the Western Provinces, or the Wars of the Vendée and the Chouannerie: 1793–1815–1832,” 17.
