GUICHARDIN (François). HISTORY OF THE ITALIAN WARS. Paris: M - Lot 76
GUICHARDIN (François). HISTORY OF THE ITALIAN WARS. Paris: Michel Sonnius, 1577. A substantial folio volume in stiff ivory-colored vellum (binding dimensions: 418 × 298 mm), embossed floral motif in the center of the covers with small embossed corner motifs, ribbed spine, aubergine morocco title label, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding); (4) folios, 479 folios, (1) errata page, (5) folios of tables. Ribbed spine later restored; a section is missing from the lower corner of the last two folios of the tables, without affecting the text. NEW 16TH-CENTURY EDITION, revised and corrected, of the French translation by Jérôme Chomedey of the Italian text by Francesco GUICCIARDINI (1483–1540), a Florentine historian, philosopher, diplomat, and politician, considered the father of modern historiography. This work, which chronicles the major events in Italy from 1490 to 1534, had a significant impact throughout Europe, particularly among humanists such as Jean Bodin and Montaigne. AN ATTRACTIVE COPY, with wide margins and a fresh block, preserved in its period binding of decorated vellum (spine later re-bound). From the “Hornus” library, with bookplate. ¶ USTC, no. 23449.
