MAUGIN (Jean). LE PREMIER LIVRE DU NOUVEAU TRISTAN ROY DE LE - Lot 89
MAUGIN (Jean). LE PREMIER LIVRE DU NOUVEAU TRISTAN ROY DE LEONOIS & D'ISEULTE ROINE DE CORNOUAILLE. Fait François par Jean Maugin dit l'Angevin. Paris, Pour Vincent Sertenas, 1552 [Paris, Veuve Maurice de la Porte, 1554]. In-folio marbled fawn calf, red morocco spine ribbed and fully decorated with gilded escutcheons and small irons, gilded scrolls at head and tail, garnet morocco title page, red edges (early binding); (1) title page, 358 pp. [title f., a-z6; aa-ff6; gg1-5]. Small loss at upper headband, lower headband frayed, beginning of split at head of spine ends, small epidermis on boards, a few small leather chips on spine ends at nerves, 3 corners worn away, soiling and loss at margins of leaf "a1", which has been restored without affecting the text, a few light wet spots and small marginal brown spots, more marked light-brown wet spots on pages 73 to 91, then fading, more marked spots on pages 195 to 204, hole (burn?) at the bottom of the quire on pages 41 to 48, diminishing but not affecting the text, paper shortage without affecting the text in the side margin of pages 141 to 144. MISSING: original title leaf with date 1554, 5 epistle pages, ode à M. de Maupas, table of chapters and privilege, leaf "gg6" containing on recto the notice to the reader, errata and completion of printing. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE RIDING ROMANCE, published in Paris by the Widow Maurice de la Porte in 1554. This copy lacks the original title page, which has been replaced by an altered antique title page, bound into the copy in the first half of the 18th century and showing the title of the work, an address (the Parisian publisher Vincent Sertenas, died 1562) and an edition date (1552) different from the original, as well as a large woodcut in the center (flowers in a pot); the publisher's address and date have clearly been retouched. Also missing are the first 5 leaves preceding the text proper (epistle, ode à M. de Maupas, table of chapters and privilege), as well as the last leaf "gg6", which on the front contains the notice to the reader, the errata and the "achevé d'imprimer". EXEMPLAIRE Jean-Baptiste Denis GUYON DE SARDIÈRE (1674-1759) with coat of arms in the spine compartments (monogram composed of two interlaced "G "s and two "S "s) and his AUTOGRAPHIC SIGNATURE in the lower margin of the title page and on the last page (p. 358). Captain in the king's regiment and son of the famous Mme de La Mothe-Guyon, this ARDENT BIBLIOPHILE bought a large number of Diane de Poitiers' books in 1724. In 1759, the Duc de La Vallière purchased M. de Sardière's book collection for 26,500 livres, a considerable sum at the time. Jean Maugin's work appears in the sale catalog under no. 853, with the address Vincent Sertenas and the date 1552, but with a few minor variations in the title. A SEDUCATING AND CURIOUS EXEMPLAIRE, UNIQUE, with this "modified" title page (probably at Guyon de Sardière's request), of fine provenance, in a 1st half 18th century red morocco binding with armorial spine. The text itself is complete. ¶ USTC, 27446, for the 1554 edition (15 ex. referenced, of which 7 in France) - Brunet, V-956, who reports as the earliest edition that of 1554 - French Vernacular Books, 49894 - La Vallière, T.
