RODRIGUEZ [or RODRIGUES] (Manuel). SUMMA CASUUM CONSCIENTIÆ. - Lot 117
RODRIGUEZ [or RODRIGUES] (Manuel). SUMMA CASUUM CONSCIENTIÆ. The most comprehensive collection of all works published to date. Venetiis [Venice], published by Georgium Variscum [Giorgio Varisco], 1607. Small 4to, soft ivory vellum, ribbed spine bearing a paper label with the handwritten title “Rodriguez / Summa ” (contemporary binding); (48) ff., 483 ff., (1) p. of register. Traces of lacing on the covers, a few small areas of vellum missing from the spine. VENETIAN EDITION IN LATIN of this treatise on casuistry by the Portuguese Franciscan Manuel Rodriguez, translated from Spanish by Balthasar de Canizal. Intended for confessors, the work addresses moral dilemmas and their resolution in the field of moral theology; it is divided into two parts, the second of which includes a discussion of judicial procedure. Printed in two columns with head and footers; the printer’s woodcut mark appears on the title page and the last leaf, depicting a crowned, two-tailed mermaid. Capuchin provenance: handwritten bookplate “Loci Capucinorum Stantij / 1629” opposite the title page, likely referring to the Capuchin monastery in Stans, Switzerland. AN ATTRACTIVE COPY, preserved in its original vellum binding, in GOOD CONDITION.
