[TRAVEL]. LESSON (R.-P.). A VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD, underta - Lot 145
[TRAVEL]. LESSON (R.-P.). A VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD, undertaken by order of the government aboard the corvette La Coquille. Paris: P. Pourrat frères, 1838–1839. Two volumes bound together into a very sturdy large 8vo volume in tan half-basane, smooth spine divided by gilt and blind-stamped bands, large blind-stamped fleurons, title and volume number gilt (contemporary binding). Minimal signs of rubbing on the binding; foxing. FIRST EDITION of the account by René-Primevère LESSON (1794–1849), surgeon and naturalist on the expedition led by Louis-Isidore Duperrey, which circumnavigated the globe from 1822 to 1825. The voyage took the explorers to the Falkland Islands, Tahiti, and Bora Bora, as well as to New Zealand, New Guinea, and Java. This account constitutes an IMPORTANT RECORD of the peoples and natural history of the Pacific, as the official history of the expedition remained unfinished. The edition is illustrated with a PORTRAIT of the author, a title vignette from 1964, and 41 PLATES (excluding title page), including 19 natural history PLATES COLORED AT THE TIME, depicting in particular birds, mammals, and fish, while the others are devoted to landscapes, costumes, and objects. ¶ Sabin, 40214 - Chadenat, 625 - Hill, 1012 - Ferguson, 2787.
