[TRAVEL]. EDIFYING AND CURIOUS LETTERS, written from the Foreign Missions. Lyon, Vernarel - Cabin & Co., 1819. One leaf (pages 61/62 of volume 7) torn but complete; a small corner loss on the map of Tonkin. NEW EDITION of this important collection of missionary correspondence compiled in the 18th century by Fathers Charles Le Gobien, Jean-Baptiste Du Halde, Nicolas Maréchal, and Louis Patouillet, and later revised and arranged geographically by Yves-Mathurin-Marie Tréaudet de Querbeuf. It is ILLUSTRATED with 45 PLATES (maps, plans, views, portraits, alphabets, etc.), including numerous fold-out plates, among which is the MAP of the “Overland Route to CALIFORNIA.” These letters were sent by Jesuit missionaries from the East, the Americas, and Asia and constitute a valuable record of how Europeans viewed these regions.
