[AUTOGRAPH]. BENJAMIN-CONSTANT (Jean-Joseph Benjamin, known - Lot 155
[AUTOGRAPH]. BENJAMIN-CONSTANT (Jean-Joseph Benjamin, known as). AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED “Benj. Constant” addressed to “Dear Mr. [STREITBERG?],” possibly WILLIAM STESTBERG. Paris, 27 rue Pigalle, May 18 [“1897” according to the postmark on the envelope]. One page handwritten in ink on a sheet (172 x 105 mm) with a black border, with a matching autograph envelope, stamped and postmarked, addressed to the recipient at “7, place Pereire.” Horizontal fold. INTERESTING NOTE ON THE VALUE OF HIS PAINTING AND THE UNCERTAINTIES OF THE ART MARKET. The Orientalist painter Benjamin-Constant (1845–1902) is delighted that his painting has remained in the possession of his correspondent: “I am glad that my ‘Envoi de Serbie’ has remained in your possession; it was worth more! And it may be worth a little more in the future! But the painting’s market value is so unpredictable that one can’t be sure of anything!” He concludes with the phrase “With my best regards,” followed by his signature. The work in question could be linked to “A Dispatch from Serbia” (1876), now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, whose provenance is documented as belonging to a certain William STESTBERG.
