Four handwritten pages on four sheets (30.5 × 23.5 cm); the first page is unnumbered, the following pages are numbered 2 through 4, with cross-outs, corrections, and interlinear and marginal additions. Blue pencil annotation “Not for tonight. M” at the top of the first sheet. Minor soiling, traces of central creases. INTERESTING WORKING MANUSCRIPT ON CATHOLICISM AND THE FRENCH PRESENCE IN NORTH AFRICA. Reflecting on the celebrations of the Eucharistic Congress in Carthage, Louis Bertrand extols their religious, international, and colonial significance. He links these ceremonies to the centennial of the conquest of Algeria and the commemorations of Saint Augustine, advocating a conception of North Africa based on the continuity of its Latin and Christian heritage. The writer pays a heartfelt tribute to Monsignor Lemaître, highlighting his work and dedication, and then discusses the support of the French authorities and the national rivalries surrounding the congress, particularly Italian sensitivities. He concludes with the hope for harmony among the various peoples of Africa, fostered by Christian charity. The numerous revisions to the text attest to the effort that went into drafting this article. This text was published under this title in “La Tunisie française” on May 26, 1930, according to the reference provided by Jacques Alexandropoulos in his study of the Carthage Congress (Anabases, 9, 2009, note 57).
