[AUTOGRAPH]. JACOB (Max). PORTRAIT OF PIERRE-LOUIS BERTHAUD - Lot 162
[AUTOGRAPH]. JACOB (Max). PORTRAIT OF PIERRE-LOUIS BERTHAUD WITH A LONG, SIGNED AUTOGRAPH DEDICATION. No place or date. One sheet (29 x 21 cm). ORIGINAL pen-and-ink DRAWING, with a BEAUTIFUL HANDWRITTEN, SIGNED DEDICATION to Pierre-Louis BERTHAUD (1899–1956), a journalist, writer, and Occitan activist, who was also a figure in the Resistance and was deported to the Dachau concentration camp. After the war, he pursued a career in politics and diplomacy, notably as a member of the Assembly of the French Union. In the lower part of the drawing, Max Jacob inscribed a dedication recalling a “morning of manuscripts” and joking about the “decadence of French art,” before concluding with the words “a sincere friend,” followed by his signature. This highly spontaneous pen-and-ink portrait attests to the graphic verve and humor of Max Jacob, a major poet and artist of the 20th-century avant-garde, who was close to Picasso and Apollinaire. AN INTERESTING AUTOGRAPH BRINGING TOGETHER TWO FIGURES FROM THE FRENCH LITERARY WORLD OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY. INCLUDED is a black-and-white PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT (23.5 x 18 cm) of Pierre-Louis BERTHAUD, a silver gelatin print made around 1950, bearing the signature “Harcourt Paris” in white in the lower right corner, mounted on a sturdy paper sleeve, with the printed inscription “Studio Harcourt [etc.]” on the front cover.
