[AUTOGRAPH]. LOTI (Pierre, pseudonym of Julien Viaud). AUTOG - Lot 163
[AUTOGRAPH]. LOTI (Pierre, pseudonym of Julien Viaud). AUTOGRAPH CARD SIGNED “Pierre Loti,” TO LOUIS BERTRAND, PROBABLY REGARDING *Le Sens de l’Ennemi*. [Paris, probably 1917, based on the partially legible postmark]. One page handwritten in ink on a black-bordered card (165 × 97 mm), with a matching autographed envelope, stamped and postmarked, addressed to Louis Bertrand c/o the Arthème Fayard bookstore, then forwarded to Chemin des Collinettes. Handwritten sender’s address on the reverse: “183 rue de l’Université, Paris VIIe.” PIERRE LOTI’S STRONG PROTEST AGAINST LOUIS BERTRAND’S REMARKS ON ISLAM. While acknowledging his colleague’s talent, Loti addresses him with this sharp rebuke: “I would like to believe, sir, that you would not have sent me your book—which, incidentally, is full of talent—if you had considered the indignation and revulsion that the section you devote to Islam would cause me. ” He concludes with the distant phrase “Best regards,” followed by his signature. The book in question is likely *Le Sens de l’ennemi* (The Meaning of the Enemy), published by Arthème Fayard in 1917, which includes a section devoted to Islam. A PARTICULARLY ELOQUENT DOCUMENT ILLUSTRATING THE DISAGREEMENT BETWEEN THE TWO WRITERS IN THEIR PORTRAYAL OF ISLAM, whose very brevity accentuates the force of the polemic.
