ROSINUS (Johannes). ROMANARUM ANTIQUITATUM. Libri decem. Basileae [Basel], Ex Officina Haeredum Petri Pernae, 1583. Small folio (210 X 315 mm) in tan basane, boards entirely decorated with gilt frames and scrolls, arms stamped in gold in the center, spine with ornate nerves, title-piece, gilt edges (old binding); (12) ff. 491 pages [no page 135/136 but leaf L6 is present, a double-page unpaginated plan], (1) page Epigramma, (32) ff. of index. Worm work at the bottom of the quire, small worm work in the text on pages 65-92 with loss of text, bumping of quires, top cap missing, tear at bottom cap, two corners worn, small spotting. ORIGINAL EDITION of this important study on the life and customs of the Romans during antiquity. It is illustrated with engraved woodcuts in the text and two double-page plans. Copy from the library of the great bibliophile Michel BEGON (1638-1710), intendant of the generality of La Rochelle and then of the island of Saint-Domingue under Louis XIV, with his large armorial bookplate pasted on the first flyleaf and a long handwritten note on the second blank page which describes the conditions of the attribution of this work to Michel Begon in 1657. The arms stamped in gold on the boards of the binding, with a slender stag, aka creeping, could not be identified, nor could the large armorial bookplate on the flyleaf opposite the handwritten note. SPECTACULAR ARMORED BINDING, made in the 17th century ¶ Brunet, IV, 1398.
