[BOSIO (Giacomo)] - BOISSAT (Pierre de) - BAUDOIN (Jean) - NABERAT (Anne de). HISTORY OF THE KNIGHTS OF THE ORDER OF ST. JOHN OF JERUSALEM, detailing their admirable foundation and regulations; the sequence of wars in the Holy Land in which they were involved; and their continuous journeys, expeditions, battles, assaults, and engagements. Paris, Jacques d’Allin, Rue Saint-Jacques, at the Image de Saint-Étienne, 1659 [“The Statutes of the Order” dated “1658”]. Three parts bound in a single folio volume in contemporary fawn sheepskin, spine with gold-threaded raised bands adorned with gilt fleurons, red morocco title label, gilt roulette at the tail (later binding); Part 1: (8) ff., 510 pp., (12) ff. of tables—Part 3: (12) ff., including an illustrated title page, 133 pp., including an illustrated title page, (6) ff. of chronological tables, 141–196 pp., 4 ill. - Part 2: 241/248 pp. [numerous pagination errors; pp. 107–110 (ff. O2–3) and 112–122 (ff. P1–4, Q1) are MISSING] - (2) folios of illustrated general title page and notice to the reader (which should appear at the beginning of the volume), 28 pp. “Malthe supplicating at the King’s feet.” Paper restorations mainly in the margins; the margins of folios *iii and *iiii of the introduction are trimmed; a few stains that occasionally make reading difficult (particularly in Part 3); copy partially washed, with paper that has become brittle; a small tear at the top of the upper spine, minor snags and tears in the endpapers, and some wear to the leather. IMPORTANT FRENCH EDITION OF ONE OF THE GREAT ANCIENT HISTORIES OF THE ORDER OF MALTA, drawn from the monumental work of Giacomo Bosio (1544–1627). The history of the Order, originally translated by Pierre de Boissat, was revised, organized, and expanded by Jean Baudoin, notably with the inclusion of the translation of the Order’s constitutions and statutes; the work is further supplemented by the contributions of Brother Anne de Naberat. This latest edition, published by Jacques d’Allin in 1659, constitutes a veritable historical and documentary compendium dedicated to the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, from their origins in the Holy Land to their establishment in Rhodes and then in Malta. It is one of the oldest and most comprehensive editions. It is divided into three parts: “The History of the Order,” the “Summary of Privileges,” and “The Statutes of the Order.” IMPORTANT COPPER-ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATION, including a BEAUTIFUL TITLE-FRONTISPICE by Jean Blanchin (curiously bound at the end of the volume, followed by the “Notice to the Reader” and the 28 pages of the petition ‘Malta Pleading at the King’s Feet’), the illustrated TITLE page of Part 3, repeated on pp. 50–53 of the same Part 3, 5 INSERTED MAPS with perspective views of cities: the fortress of Margat, a fold-out map of the city of Ptolemais, Cyprus (following page 46, which is missing), and Valletta, the island and seat of Malta. The illustrations in the text include 59 PORTRAITS of the Grand Masters of the Order, a family tree of the Knights of Malta, a large portrait showing the habit of the Order’s nuns, and 4 views and maps of cities (Jerusalem, Ptolemais, Rhodes, and Valletta). COPY AS IS, preserved in a 19th-century pastiche binding, with the 2nd and 3rd parts reversed, the frontispiece title page and the notice to the reader bound at the end, 7 text leaves MISSING from Part 2 and the Cyprus insert MISSING. ¶ Saffroy, I-5384.
